Cleveland Cavaliers guard indicted on gun charges
Cleveland Cavaliers guard Delonte West has been indicted on concealed weapons charges stemming from a September traffic stop during which police said they found a shotgun hidden in a guitar case strapped across his back and other guns in his possession.
West faced a league suspension for the weapons charges, which a Prince George’s County grand jury formally filed against him Tuesday afternoon. Police said West was speeding on his three-wheeled motorcycle Sept. 17 when he cut off a K-9 officer on the Capital Beltway. After he was pulled over, a search revealed the shotgun in the guitar case, a loaded 9 mm in his pants pocket and a loaded .357 Magnum strapped to his leg.
Beltway Sniper’s attorneys ask U.S. Supreme Court to stop execution
John Allen Muhammad’s attorneys have asked the U.S. Supreme Court to halt the Beltway Sniper’s execution while justices consider whether his trial was ineffective.
The 48-year-old has been scheduled to die by lethal injection Nov. 10 in Virginia. Muhammad was the mastermind behind a three-week October 2002 killing spree that left 10 dead in Maryland, Virginia and D.C.
Restaurant owner found dead in her Northwest apartment
Nor Amaya, owner of Coppi’s restaurant on U Street, was found strangled in her Northwest apartment, police said.
Police were called to the 3600 block of 16th Street Monday night after Amaya’s brother discovered his 38-year-old sister’s lifeless body and called the authorities.
Pet birds die in Rockville house fire
Nearly two dozen pet birds perished in a house fire early Tuesday morning, Montgomery County fire department officials said.
When firefighters arrived at the burning house on the 500 block of Mannakee Street, they found the residents trying to get back inside to rescue the 22 birds that lived there, officials said. The fire started in he basement and quickly spread through the house, causing about $400,000 in damage.
