President Obama, addressing supporters at a high-dollar fundraiser last night, expressed his belief that the American people’s “decency and strength” would cause his reelection, as the “better angels of our nature” would overcome the opposition.
“This will be my last campaign,” Obama promised supporters in Chicago. “I absolutely believe that the American people still have confidence and faith in this country and there’s a core decency and strength and resilience to be tapped.”
The president noted that “most of the time the better angels of our nature win out,” but added that “we’re going to have to work hard to get it done.”
To that end, he also joked about the need for campaign money. “A friend of many of us, Ab Mikva, used to say that being friends with a politician is like permanently having a child in college,” he recalled. “Every year there’s another tuition check.”
