An Alexandria employee has been charged with embezzlement, the second worker in the past week to be accused of stealing money from the city.

Alexandria police said 48-year-old Addo Lomotey is accused of taking money from the cash register at the Chinquapin Recreation Center, where he worked at the front desk.

Police spokeswoman Ashley Hildebrandt said the department began investigating the case in late July. A citizen reported the alleged thefts from the register, police said.

Hildebrandt said she didn’t know how much money Lomotey, who has worked for the city for four years, allegedly embezzled. She said investigators were still determining how long the thefts had been happening.

Authorities said the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities is conducting its own inquiry into cash-handling policies and the city’s recreation centers.

Last week, a human resources employee was charged for allegedly taking unearned overtime pay. A city spokesman said that department is evaluating its oversight procedures for overtime pay.
