Gibbs: Most Obama supporters will stay with us

After Mark Halperin predicted a strong third party candidacy if Newt Gingrich wins the Republican nomination, former White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs with a show of confidence, arguing that the memory of Bush’s policies will keep most of the voters who supported President Obama in 2008 in his camp during the reelection bid.

Halperin suggested that Obama might suffer from the emergence of “a strong, centristy third-party candidate,” who he predicted will run if Gingrich gets the nomination.

Gibbs dismissed the idea, saying “we always have this moment in the election when we start talking about a third-party candidate,” but he believes that “most voters who support Barack Obama and the Democratic Party aren’t going anywhere.”
