House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy accused Justin Amash of being a closet Democrat after the Michigan Republican said President Trump has committed impeachable offenses.
“He votes more with Nancy Pelosi than he ever votes with me. It’s a question whether he’s even in our Republican conference as a whole,” McCarthy said of Amash, a libertarian, on Fox News Channel’s “Sunday Morning Futures.” Speaker Nancy Pelosi is the leader of House Democrats.
“What he wants is attention in this process. He’s not a criminal attorney,” the California congressman added. “It’s very disturbing. … He never supported the president, and I think he’s just looking for attention.”
Amash was the first Republican in Congress to declare Trump’s actions during special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation impeachable. Mueller was appointed to examine Russian interference in the 2016 election and found that Trump campaign officials had not colluded with the foreign power.
In his 448-page report, Mueller detailed 10 instances of possible obstruction of justice but did not conclude whether Trump was guilty of the offense. Attorney General William Barr declared Trump did not obstruct justice.
“Contrary to Barr’s portrayal, Mueller’s report reveals that President Trump engaged in specific actions and a pattern of behavior that meet the threshold for impeachment,” Amash said Saturday.
In response, Trump slammed the congressman as a “lightweight” and “loser” Sunday morning.
