Minnesota police find two dead of gunshot wounds after car crash amid protests

Two people died of gunshot wounds after a car crash in Minneapolis early Monday morning, according to authorities.

Metro Transit Police responded to a ShotSpotter alert, a gunshot notification detection system, just after 2 a.m. The alert pinged to the intersection of East 28th Street and 14th Avenue South, according to KARE11, a local news outlet.

When law enforcement officers arrived at the scene, they found a two-vehicle car crash with one of the cars abandoned. In the other vehicle, police discovered a deceased man who suffered a gunshot wound.

Another man was found in the middle of the street, about a block from the crash, who had also been shot. Officers said they attempted to save the man’s life, but he was pronounced dead. Police are investigating the incident.

Minneapolis and Metro Transit Police did not immediately respond to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.

The incident came just one day after Minneapolis police shot a black man named Daunte Wright, 20, during a traffic stop. Police pulled Wright over for a traffic violation when they discovered he had an outstanding arrest warrant, according to the Brooklyn Center Police.

Wright reportedly tried getting back into the vehicle as officers were trying to apprehend him. One officer opened fire, hitting him. The car drove several blocks before striking another vehicle. Wright was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following Wright’s shooting, protests descended into the night and turned violent at times. Wright was shot just miles from where George Floyd died while in police custody last May. The now-former officer allegedly responsible for Floyd’s death, Derek Chauvin, is currently on trial facing charges of third-degree murder, second-degree murder, and manslaughter.
