Speaking to MSNBC’s Chris Matthews Thursday, former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay told the “Hardball” that he couldn’t guarantee that he’d vote for Sen. John McCain in a presidential match-up against Sen. Hillary Clinton. When Matthews asked DeLay, “Will you vote for John McCain to keep the Clintons out of the White House, Mr. Conservative?”, DeLay responded: “I’m not sure I can answer that right now. I want to see, who is John McCain on the election day when I go to the polls. I don’t have to decide that right now. I’m going to be pushing the conservative cause, and let’s see what John McCain does reaching out to conservatives. If he continues down to be the same old John McCain that used to have disdain for the conservatives, than I’m not sure who’s the most dangerous to be in the White House.”
DeLay is attending this week’s Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C., an annual gathering of conservatives that have been a consistent thorn in the side of Sen. John McCain. McCain’s speech Thursday was littered with boos and jeers from those in the crowd who believe that McCain isn’t a consistent conservative.
