Severe thunderstorms whipped through Washington, D.C., Thursday afternoon, causing the Washington Monument to vanish from view in the heavy downpour.
Video footage shot from east of where the structure sits on the National Mall captured moments when heavy rain overtook the monument, causing it to disappear on camera.

The heavy storm system caused the National Weather Service to issue flash flood warnings for parts of Montgomery County, Maryland, as well as for several northern Virginia communities and Washington, D.C.
