Rep. Rashida Tlaib said during a campaign appearance for Bernie Sanders that she supports the Vermont socialist partially because she would like a president that you don’t have to check “all the time.”

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime moment in our country to elect someone who won’t sell us out,” she said to cheers, according to Breitbart News. “It would feel good to have a president that you didn’t have to check him all the time.”

The Michigan Democrat added that 2020 is “about showing up for others” and urged Sanders supporters to keep the “kids caged at the border” in mind when they head to the polls.

Tlaib has actively spoken out in support of Sanders several times in recent weeks, including a tweet attacking Joe Biden for his treatment of Anita Hill during the Clarence Thomas hearings, as well as outreach to Michigan’s Muslim community on behalf of the senator.

“He doesn’t just see me as a Palestinian or Muslim, he sees me as someone who’s also against corporate greed,” Tlaib told Middle East Eye. “He sees me as an equal.”

“I expect them to turn out,” Tlaib said about Michigan Muslims. “I know that if they go to the polls, they’ll vote for Sen. Sanders. I want them to deliver Michigan for Sen. Sanders.”

The state of Michigan will be holding its presidential primary on Tuesday, with 125 delegates at stake. It is widely believed that Sanders needs to win the state if he intends to catch up to the former vice president in the delegate count.

Sanders beat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Michigan primary by roughly 1 percentage point.
