Parkland drama students perform at the Tony Awards: WATCH

Students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School’s drama department were honored at Sunday’s 2018 Tony Awards, accepting an invitation to perform “Seasons of Love” from the 1996 musical “Rent” on stage at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall.

Melody Herzfeld, the school’s drama teacher, also received the Excellence in Theatre Education Award after she sheltered 65 students in her classroom from a lone gunman, likely saving their lives.

Seventeen people were killed when the shooter opened fire with an AR-15-style rifle at the school in Parkland, Fla., on Valentine’s Day.

The tragedy prompted many of the student survivors to advocate for gun law reform, including organizing the March for Our Lives demonstration in Washington, D.C., on March 24.
