The District’s head of transportation is on deck to join the Metro board of directors.
District Department of Transportation Director Terry Bellamy has been nominated to fill an alternate slot on the transit agency’s 16-seat board.
He testified Wednesday before a D.C. Council committee about the nomination but still must be approved by both the commitee and the full council to take the seat. It is likely that he will be approved.
He would join Ward 4 Councilwoman Muriel Bowser, former City Administrator Tom Downs who also ran Amtrak, and lobbyist Tom Bulger in representing the District. The District, Maryland, Virginia and the federal government each get four seats on the board, two voting spots and two alternates.
Bellamy would take the slot left empty by Tony Giancola, who was the D.C. alternate until moving to become a federal alternate. The seat has been empty for more than a year.
Although some board members make thousands and thousands of dollars to serve on the board, Bellamy would not be paid by either Metro or the District.
The appointment, if approved, would mean that all seats but one federal alternate slot are filled on the board of directors that governs the transit agency.
The board has almost completely turned over in the past two years, with only three members — Cathy Hudgins, Bill Euille and Tony Giancola — still in service since the deadly 2009 Fort Totten crash.
