SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Gov. Susana Martinez has appointed an Albuquerque lawyer to fill a vacancy on the governing board of a financing agency that’s scrambling to deal with the issuance of a fake audit.

The governor named attorney Nann Winter to the New Mexico Finance Authority board on Wednesday, shortly before it held a meeting about the audit.
Winter and other board members scrapped a plan for an outside law firm — hired by and answering to the authority — to investigate how the fraudulent financial audit occurred. The board wants a similar legal and accounting probe done under the supervision of the state auditor’s office to ensure the work is independent. The authority’s top management hired a law firm law week but the board canceled the more than $1 million contract.
