A flock of dead birds brought traffic to a halt Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 95 near Laurel, Maryland officials said.

The murmuration of starlings — birds that are known to fly in tight groups — may have flown into a passing truck or power lines crossing the highway, state natural resources officials told the Associated Press. Workers removed the birds from the highway with shovels, slowing traffic for hours.

Some of the birds are being tested for poison as a precaution, officials from the Department of Natural Resources said.
