GE grant to improve math, science at Erie schools

ERIE, Pa. (AP) — The GE Foundation is giving the Erie School District $8.6 million over four years to improve math and science instruction in the northwestern Pennsylvania city’s high schools.

GE Transportation, the locomotive manufacturing arm of the electrical device giant, is based in Erie and its foundation has just finished delivering on a $15 million grant to the city’s grade schools.

The Erie Times-News (http://bit.ly/LsuUeX ) reports Friday that the new grant will help the district hire 10 full-time Common Core State Standard and science standards facilitators for the city’s four high schools. The Common Core is a group of more rigorous academic standards that will go into effect in 45 states, including Pennsylvania, by 2014.

The facilitators will help develop new math, science and literacy programs in the schools.
