A new ad from Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton argues “veterans deserve better” than her Republican rival, Donald Trump. The 30-second video features Trump’s most infamous comments juxtaposed with images of military veterans—many of them with physical injuries—and their loved ones listening to those comments on TV.
“I know more about ISIS than the generals do,” Trump says as a man with a U.S. Navy veteran’s cap listens. Next, a younger man with a prosethetic leg listens with his family to Trump’s comment from last summer that U.S. senator John McCain is “not a war hero” because he was “captured.” “I like people who weren’t captured, okay?” he says as an older man watches.
Near the end of the ad, Trump is asked by ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, “What sacrifice have you made for your country?”
“I think I’ve made a lot of sacrifices,” Trump says. In the final shot of the ad, former Georgia senator Max Cleland is shown listening as Trump touts the buildings he has built as his “sacrifice.” Cleland, a Vietnam veteran, lost both of his legs and much of his right arm after attempting to pick up what he did not realize was a live grenade.
