I wrote last month about how white suburban women appear to be fleeing the Democratic Party in droves in the final weeks before the midterm elections. A new poll from the Wall Street Journal confirms this trend: The same women who helped Democrats make significant gains in 2018 and rejected former President Donald Trump in 2020 are now shifting drastically toward the Right.
The survey found that suburban women now favor Republican candidates by 15 percentage points. When the Wall Street Journal conducted this same survey in August, they favored Democrats by 12 percentage points.
HILLARY CLINTON CRITICIZES KARI LAKE OVER APPARENT JOKE MADE ABOUT ATTACK ON NANCY PELOSI’S HUSBAND
The reasons for this shift, according to the outlet, are the same as those driving other independents and even registered Democrats into the arms of the GOP: inflation, the increased cost of living, and soaring crime rates. Half of suburban women told the Wall Street Journal they believe Republicans have a better economic plan than Democrats. On inflation, 55% said they trust Republicans to get the crisis under control, while just 24% said Democrats.
This is one of the biggest indicators that next Tuesday’s elections are going to be a wipeout for Democrats. Suburban women make up about 20% of the electorate and are a critical swing vote. As mentioned earlier, they broke for Democrats in 2018 and 2020 and still tend to side with the Democratic Party on social issues, such as abortion.
But their votes have to be earned, and besides running some ads on abortion and convincing President Joe Biden to stay up past his bedtime to give a speech on how our democracy is supposedly under attack, Democrats have done nothing to convince women that they’re the better option. They refuse to even mention the issues that women care about, like crime and inflation, and when they do, it’s often to dismiss these issues outright. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), for example, thinks all the polls ranking inflation and crime as the top concerns are fake news, and Hillary Clinton believes the voters concerned about the economy are just too stupid to understand what’s really important, like the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
Pelosi and Clinton might be a couple of out-of-touch geezers, but the fact is that a lot of the Democratic candidates running in next week’s elections are just as bad. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul claims rising crime rates in her state are a Republican “conspiracy,” and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer clearly believes that if she says “Roe v. Wade” over and over again, everyone will forget that a tank of gas now costs, on average, $4 per gallon.
Contrary to what Democrats seem to think, women aren’t stupid. And they’re not going to support candidates who treat them like they are. A whole lot of Democratic candidates are going to learn that the hard way next week.
