Taxpayers get three extra days to file

Taxpayers nationwide will get three extra days to file their federal tax returns this year, thanks to Emancipation Day. The District will observe Emancipation Day on April 15, which is a Friday. The Internal Revenue Service has decided to treat the local holiday like a federal holiday by extending the tax deadlines to Monday, April 18. Emancipation Day celebrates the day President Abraham Lincoln signed into law a bill ending slavery in D.C.

Taxpayers who ask for an extension will have until Oct. 17 to file their returns.
