The Redskins continued to make big news, this time with their cuts. Washington released two longtime veterans, center Casey Rabach and defensive end Phillip Daniels.
They also released nose tackle Maake Kemoeatu, running backs Chad Simpson and Andre Brown, receiver Roydell Williams and punter Sam Paulescu.
You can read Daniels comments on being released here. And Rabach’s thoughts on getting cut here.
Rabach said via text message that the Redskins wanted to get younger. He’ll turn 34 and the Redskins have younger options in Kory Lichtensteiger and Will Montgomery. Both played guard last season, but are better suited for center.
Though Rabach’s play had slipped of late, coaches and linemates valued his intangibles, particularly his ability to quickly recognize defenses and make line calls. He also served as a spokesman for the offense at times.
Daniels, 37, was a key free agent in 2004 and started 66 games, but none in 2010. He was a backup end in the 3-4 front and though he held the point of attack well, the Redskins have wanted to get younger, faster legs on defense. Daniels, too, was considered a team leader.
Kemoeatu was signed to play nose tackle, but was coming off leg injuries and it was clear last August that it would take him a while to be at full strength. But Kemoeatu also battled shoulder injuries and was never able to establish himself in the middle.
