Jim Gilmore: Kaine can’t wrap up Virginia for Clinton

Former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore doesn’t think his state’s 13 electoral votes are a lock for Hillary Clinton just because she picked Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine as her running mate.

“They think by putting put Sen. Tim Kaine on the ticket that they’ve wrapped up Virginia. We’ll they’re wrong,” Gilmore told a crowd in Colonial Williamsburg on Tuesday before an appearance by Republican vice presidential nominee Mike Pence.

“This thing is moving our way in Virginia,” he said.

Gilmore, a former GOP candidate for president himself, and now a Donald Trump supporter, also shared his nickname for Kaine, who also served as governor of Virginia from 2006 to 2010.

“I’ve been calling him ‘Timmy the Shifter,’ you see because, he took some positions to get elected to the Senate in Virginia and now you know he’s on the ticket he’s shifting a little bit in order to accommodate Hillary Clinton,” Gilmore said before listing off Kaine’s shift to the left on offshore drilling, right-to-work, abortion and gun control.

He also panned Clinton for her recent “basket of deplorables” remark about Trump supporters, and called her “elite and arrogant.”

A RealClearPolitics average of polls shows Clinton’s lead over Trump has shrunk in recent weeks to 44.3 percent over Trump’s 40.8 percent.
