Carney named senior political columnist at the Examiner

Timothy P. Carney has been promoted to the position of senior political columnist at The Washington Examiner, joining Byron York and Michael Barone as featured writers for the newspaper’s politics page.

“To be included in a columnist rotation with Michael Barone and Byron York is a real honor,” Carney said.

Carney, 32, has served as the Examiner’s lobbying editor for the past 18 months. During that time, he explored the many ways special interest organizations distort American politics.

“Tim understands better than any journalist in Washington how political money and friends in high places often trump the public interest,” said Washington Examiner Editor Stephen G. Smith. “He’s a protege of the late columnist Robert Novak, and like Novak he’s a tough and enterprising reporter.”

Before joining The Examiner, Carney was a senior reporter and editor at the Evans-Novak Political Report. His work has appeared in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Post, American Spectator, the Huffington Post and many other publications.

His 2009 book “Obamanomics” was hailed by commentator Jonah Goldberg as “conservative muckraking at its best.” Carney’s first book, “The Big Ripoff: How Big Business and Big Government Steal Your Money,” won the Templeton Enterprise Award from the Intercollegiate Studies Institute and the 2006 Lysander Spooner Award for the “best book on liberty.”

Carney is a graduate of St. John’s College in Annapolis and a native of Pelham, N.Y.

His column will appear on Mondays and Thursdays, and he will contribute regularly to The Examiner’s Beltway Confidential blog.
