Fauci predicts omicron will ‘find’ just about everybody

Dr. Anthony Fauci, who is President Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser, predicts the omicron variant of COVID-19 will “find” just about everybody.

During a conversation on Tuesday with J. Stephen Morrison, the senior vice president with the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Fauci also stressed that while the highly transmissible strain is everywhere, mainly unvaccinated people will get the “brunt” of any severe illnesses.

“Omicron, with its extraordinary, unprecedented degree of efficiency of transmissibility, will ultimately find just about everybody,” Fauci said, according to CNN. “Those who have been vaccinated … and boosted would get exposed. Some, maybe a lot of them, will get infected but will very likely, with some exceptions, do reasonably well in the sense of not having hospitalization and death.”

The omicron variant, the first cases of which were detected in South Africa in November, has become the dominant strain in the United States and places across the world. Early data show that it is more transmissible than other variants but causes less severe illness.

With the spread of omicron, cases are surging nationwide, leading to renewed challenges for hospitals and health emergencies.
