NEW YORK (AP) — Three New York City jail guards have been indicted for beating a handcuffed Rikers Island inmate with a baton in 2012 and covering up the assault.
Department of Investigation Commissioner Mark Peters says two correction officers and a captain were arrested on attempted assault and falsifying business records charges Wednesday.
Peters says the case was referred to prosecutors as part of a larger investigation into drugs, contraband and other misconduct in the nation’s second-largest jail system.
Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson says the attack occurred the day after Superstorm Sandy in Rikers’ George R. Vierno Center.
Authorities say a handcuffed Gabino Genao was beaten in a stairwell after being verbally abusive to the guards.
They were freed on $50,000 bail each following arraignment. They’re next in court Sept. 16.
