The Redskins wasted no time hiring Vinny Cerrato’s replacement, naming Bruce Allen as their new executive vice president/general manager. He’s the son of legendary Redskins coach George Allen and has served in executive positions with Oakland and Tampa Bay. He was named the NFL’s Executive of the Year in 2002. He will take over immediately.

“Bruce Allen is the personification of an NFL winner,” Redskins owner Dan Snyder said in a statement.  “Our fans know his heritage; we know his abilities.  He is the right person to lead our club.”

Allen was the Buccaneers’ GM from 2004-08. He’s close friends with Jon Gruden, a name likely to surface in the Redskins search for a new coach; Jim Zorn is expected to be fired after the season.

“This is an extraordinary opportunity with one of the world’s most successful sports franchises,” said Allen. “I love everything about this assignment; I know what it means to be dedicated to the Redskins. I can’t wait to get to work.”
