Gingrich on Boris Johnson: ‘Think Margaret Thatcher with wild hair’

Former Republican Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich offered praise of the new U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

In a Tuesday tweet, he wrote, “Boris Johnson is the Donald Trump of Britain. Put on your seat belt and prepare for a wild ride. He will cut through a lot of the conventional wisdom and the European bureaucrats will find he is much smarter and tougher than his predecessor.”

“Think Margaret Thatcher with wild hair,” he added.

Gingrich, often considered to be a conservative provocateur, was described as a “polarizing” figure during his time in Congress, often questioning long-standing practices of lawmaking. Gingrich, now 76, is also an accomplished author and public speaker.

Johnson, often simply referred to by the media as “Boris,” secured his place as the U.K.’s newest prime minister on Tuesday. The leader of the Conservative Party, 55, previously served as a member of Parliament and as mayor of London. Johnson is also a noted Winston Churchill biographer. Not unlike President Trump, Johnson is known for being outspoken and direct in his politics.

Margaret Thatcher, former leader of the Conservative Party, served as the U.K.’s first female prime minister from 1979 until 1990 and was highly regarded by many Americans for her fearless nature and collaboration with President Ronald Reagan.
