Woman sleeps through tornado ripping off her roof

Nothing wakes 76-year-old Betty Russell — not even a tornado ripping through her home.

On Friday, the Alabama woman fell asleep on her couch while watching TV, the Associated Press reported. It wasn’t until she was awakened by sirens that she realized a tornado had destroyed much of her house, including part of the roof.

“I didn’t know I was that heavy a sleeper,” she told AP. “It had caved in the south side of my house and honestly I didn’t hear it. I cannot believe I didn’t hear it but I didn’t.”

In the bedroom where Russell normally sleeps, a giant hole was torn in the ceiling above her bed.

Russell, who turns 77 on Dec. 26, credits angels with her protection.

“I am so thankful to God,” she told AP.

Despite the damage, Russell will spend the holidays with her family in Colorado as planned.
