Vogue backs Clinton in its first endorsement

Vogue endorsed Hillary Clinton for president Tuesday, in an unprecedented step for the fashion magazine.

“Vogue has no history of political endorsements,” read the endorsement Vogue published on its website Tuesday. “Editors in chief have made their opinions known from time to time, but the magazine has never spoken in an election with a single voice. Given the profound stakes of this one, and the history that stands to be made, we feel that should change.”

The endorsement said that while a Clinton administration would face a huge challenge to unify a divided America, “two words give us hope: Madame President.” The unsigned statement admits the announcement is probably less-than-surprising as Vogue has “enthusiastically” covered Clinton’s rise to political prominence and has profiled her a total of six times.

The article notes they have also featured Trump “or, more particularly, his family members Ivana, Marla, Melania and Ivanka — multiple times in our pages.”

“We understand that Clinton has not always been a perfect candidate, yet her fierce intelligence and considerable experience are reflected in policies and positions that are clear, sound and hopeful,” it said.

Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour is a longtime progressive activist and public supporter of the current Democratic nominee. She co-hosted a fashion show fundraiser with Clinton’s daughter Chelsea in New York the day before the city’s famed fashion week kicked off. Pantsuit icon Clinton reportedly sought fashion advice from Wintour for the campaign trail.
