Queen Elizabeth’s stunt double receives 18-month prison sentence

The stunt double who portrayed Queen Elizabeth II during the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, England, was sentenced to 18 months in prison on Tuesday for shattering his then-girlfriend’s shoulder.

Gary Connery, who portrayed the queen when he parachuted into the Olympic Stadium 10 years ago, was previously convicted of grievous bodily harm without intent. The judge additionally imposed an indefinite restraining order on Connery that prohibits him from contacting the victim’s family.

Connery reportedly threw his girlfriend, Tanya Brass, down the stairs in 2020 during a drunken disagreement on who should turn off the light and close the gate, the Daily Mail reported. The throw caused Brass’s shoulder to shatter, and she suffered a cut on her forehead.

“The assault by Gary has also had a massive impact on me, and I still haven’t fully recovered to this day,” Brass said in a letter to the court. “The assault has also had a massive impact on my mental health. I am seeing a councillor and I don’t know how I would have gone through this without their support. I want Gary to take responsibility for what he has done.”

Oxford Crown Court Judge Nigel Daly agreed that Connery showed no remorse or responsibility for his actions, according to the outlet.

“It is clear you have shown no remorse for what happened as you accepted no responsibility on your part,” Daly said in the sentencing. “You still present a danger to the public. I have read the pre-sentence report, and I see no realistic prospect of rehabilitation. However she was behaving, she did not deserve to be pushed down the stairs. That could result in extremely serious injuries. In this case, it shattered her upper arm, moving toward the shoulder, and also another injury to her head.”

Connery, a well-known stunt double, made waves in 2012 when he portrayed the queen during a segment of the opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics. Connery and a stunt double for Daniel Craig’s James Bond parachuted into the Olympic Stadium from 800 feet high.

Connery will be required to serve half the sentence before being made eligible for parole in nine months, according to the outlet.
