One dead and 16 wounded after car crashes into Apple store

At least one person is dead and over a dozen people were wounded after a car crashed into an Apple store in Massachusetts Monday, according to multiple reports.

Sixteen people were taken to the hospital after the crash, which left a large hole in the Apple store at Derby Street Shops in Hingham, Massachusetts, the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office confirmed to NBC 10 Boston.

“Hanover C-1, Engine-4 & Ambulance-1 are responding on a 2nd alarm assignment to 94 Derby Street, the Apple Store, for the motor vehicle into the building with multiple injured and trapped,” the Hanover Massachusetts Fire Department wrote in a Facebook post around 11 a.m. local time.

Multiple ambulances were reportedly seen transporting victims to medical facilities, including two that went to hospitals in Boston and 14 that went to South Shore Hospital.

People initially trapped in the building were subsequently rescued, officials later confirmed, per CBS.

The Apple store was scheduled to open Monday at 10 a.m. local time. The cause of the crash and the extent of the injuries are not immediately clear. Authorities have initiated a criminal inquiry into the matter against the driver, District Attorney Timothy Cruz said.

“This morning was an unthinkable morning, and people are trying to get through it and process what happened. This investigation is active and ongoing,” Cruz explained, CBS reported.

The driver has been apprehended by police and was not hospitalized after the collision, according to Cruz.
