New Learn Liberty interactive game allows you to levy taxes on the American people

Convinced that you could manage taxes better than the federal government? Well, now is your chance to put on your lawmaker hat and start doling them out among the American people.

That’s the premise of “The Interactive Great American Taxing Game,” a new interactive game created by Learn Liberty, a non-profit organization providing resources for learning about the ideas of a free society.

In the game, players are able to decide what items – including cigarettes, gas and luxury goods – they would like to see taxed in order to raise revenue for the country. The players will then face the consequences of their taxing – or lack thereof – at the end of the game.

Art Carden, an assistant professor of economics at Samford University, helps you out through each step of the game, explaining in layman’s terms who will be affected by the taxes you choose to levy. He also explains how taxing certain goods will affect the consumer, the supplier and revenue alike and breaks down how certain taxes will vary across state lines.

“What matters is not whose name is on the check to or from the government,” Carden says in the opening video. “What matters is whose behavior is changed the most by changing prices.”
