SEE IT: Instagram account created to blast white staffers on Capitol Hill

An Instagram account is posting memes about what it’s like to work on Capitol Hill as a person of color.

The account, @dear_white_staffers, was created in late January 2020 and received roughly 30 likes per post at first. By the end of the year, the account began posting photos of actual staffers to make more memes and jokes about them.

First came a picture of Colorado Sen. Michael Bennett with a small group picture of his white staff. It was a screenshot from a tweet that is no longer on the site. While it was not his entire staff, it received many more comments and likes. “Lol how come all these hill staffers act and dress like they are 43 years old and act like they own their parents vacation homes on Cape Cod,” the caption reads.

As the posts became more personal and anonymous users started sharing photos from inside the Capitol, the account rose in popularity. Then, the account started posting stories from followers who claimed to work there. It conducted impromptu polls to evaluate how many staffers are on food stamps or live in subsidized housing.

Last month, the account had a little over 9,000 followers. Now, it has over 22,000. On Thursday, a reporter asked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi about the account.

“Madame Speaker, there’s a new Instagram account called Dear White Staffers collecting troubling accounts,” the reporter began, but Pelosi interrupted.

“If you’ve got something extraneous, I’m happy to get to it,” Pelosi said as she raised her hand to shush the reporter. “But let’s talk about — we’re trying to keep the government open, we’re trying to be preeminent in the world, and I’m happy to come back to that. Any questions about what we’re doing here?”

She did not return to the topic, however. The reporter who questioned her later wrote on Twitter that she did respond privately to him.

According to the account’s bio, it calls itself “Congressional BIPOC s***posters on Capitol Hill. Livin rent free in your head. We are workers, we do the work.”

One Twitter user applauded their activity on social media. She called them “Congressional staffers pushing back on poverty pay and horrible working conditions” in a tweet. “Please go support them!”

Yet the account owner seems paranoid of being removed from the platform. There is already a backup account on Instagram should anything happen to the original account.

Back in January, the account posted a private message they had received. At the time, the account had not yet reached 10,000 followers, but its reputation was already known on Capitol Hill.

“Our chief just emailed all staff to tell us we have a new social media policy and that is we have to unfollow your account,” the message read. “[Please] keep [anonymous] and keep it going.”

The individual, or individuals, behind the account did not respond to requests for comment. However, they did acknowledge that they had seen the clip of Pelosi.
