South Texas official pleads guilty to bribery

LAREDO, Texas (AP) — A South Texas county commissioner has pleaded guilty to taking bribes from an undercover federal agent and others.

Court documents show Webb County Commissioner Kristopher Michael Montemayor took three payments totaling $11,000 and electronic goods valued at $2,700 from an undercover FBI employee in return for employee information on competing business proposals to the county and a pledge to vote for the agent’s proposal.

Montemayor also admitted to receiving a $37,000 pickup truck in exchange of giving a man and his wife county jobs that paid $26,000 and $45,553.

Montemayor is to be sentenced on Oct. 7. The bribery charge carries a maximum 10-year prison sentence.
