WATCH: 154 shots fired during Baltimore shootout

Police in Baltimore have released body camera footage of a chase and shootout that ended with one officer injured and the suspect dead.

The shootout occurred in late August and began with an officer who noticed a suspect, armed with a gun, who had attempted to strike another officer with his SUV days earlier. The policeman darted to his vehicle and grabbed his rifle before a chase ensued. Tyrone Domingo Banks, 30, began shooting at responding law enforcement who had him cornered. In the process of subduing the man, officers fired off 154 rounds of ammunition, according to Fox 43.

Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison released the footage at a news conference Friday and said the video best shows what happened that night.

“What we can say in this situation is this was an environment where the video clearly depicts he gets out of the car and points a weapon,” Harrison said. “The officers already recognized him from the day before where there were two dangerous incidents and then he proceeds and there’s a second encounter.”

Harrison said that police are investigating the judgment behind the level of force and the number of bullets that were fired to kill the man.

“We as a police department have to be accountable for where every one of our rounds ends up and we have to be accountable for collateral injuries, and collateral damage, and collateral deaths so every time we discharge a firearm that is a concern for us,” he said.

It isn’t clear when during the confrontation the officer was shot and injured. Thirteen officers are on administrative leave following the shootout and law enforcement is working to complete a ballistics report.
