Authorities are seeking an armed man who escaped from jail last week in Western Maryland and has since been spotted in the Washington area. After being arrested on Jan. 21, Deandre Kelly assaulted two officers at the Garrett County Detention Center two days later and forced them to open an exit door by producing a gun, according to the U.S. Marshals Service. They considering Kelly to be armed and extremely dangerous.
Kelly is said to have an extensive community network in the D.C. area. The University of Maryland sent out an alert in College Park that he had been spotted in the area. Although he was not seen on campus, the U.S. Marshals Service believe he is still in the Washington area. Kelly is 6 feet tall and weighs 275 pounds. He is 29 years old, black with a medium complexion with short, black hair. He has used aliases including Deandre Roach, John Williams and Zed Kelly.
Kelly was arrested last week on cocaine distribution charges and authorities say he has an extensive history of distributing narcotics. Past charges in the District and Maryland include possession with intent to distribute PCP, cocaine and marijuana. He also has an assault charge from 2007 and armed robbery from 1999.
“We need to get Kelly off the streets, “Deputy U.S. Marshal Tony Campos said. “There is a $6,000 reward for information leading directly to his arrest.”
Anyone with information is urged to call the U.S. Marshals Service at 301-489-1717 or 800-336-0102. Campos can be reached directly at 202-359-7468. If Kelly’s seen on the University of Maryland campus, call police there at 301-405-3333.
If Kelly looks familiar, it might be because The Washington Examiner featured Kelly on the Crime & Punishment page in November 2010 for having skipped out on a federal court date involving the sale of cocaine.
