Even though Donald Trump is the most “pro LGBT-presidential nominee in the history of the Republican Party,” a collection of LGBT Republicans won’t endorse him for president.
The Log Cabin Republicans, a group of LGBT Republicans, withheld its endorsement of the party’s nominee because of who Trump has surrounded himself with.
“As Mr. Trump spoke positively about the LGBT community in the United States, he concurrently surrounded himself with senior advisers with a record of opposing LGBT equality,” according to a statement from the group.
It added that Trump’s support of anti-LGBT legislation such as the “First Amendment Defense Act” that the group opposes also factored into the decision. The legislation introduced last year said that the government cannot take any discriminatory action against someone based solely on their religious opposition to same-sex marriage.
The group said it will spend the remainder of the 2016 elections to work on down-ballot races, and promised to work with the Trump administration if the GOP nominee wins.
Trump said during his convention speech that as president he will “do everything in my power to protect LGBTQ citizens.”
