It’s time for yet another defection from the Colonial Athletic Association. This time it’s Old Dominion, following dreams of becoming a football powerhouse, or something, by joining Conference USA.
And just like it did when VCU bolted three days ago for the A-10, George Mason is sitting still. Just don’t mistake the Patriots’ contentment with where they are for steadfast defenders of the CAA, which is down to seven eligible teams for the 2013 college basketball postseason. VCU is gone as of July, both Towson and UNC Wilmington are likely ineligible due to low Academic Progress Rate scores, and ODU and Georgia State are banned since they’re leaving, too.

The foundation of George Mason’s allegiance is no more solid than the landscape of conference realignment, which isn’t done. The future of the Big East’s non-football schools remains muddled at best, and the CAA could pursue Davidson and Charleston, according to reports.
When the Patriots get the right offer, they’ll still bolt. Hopefully for them, it’ll be attractive. Right now, the CAA isn’t.
