UN fails to pass resolutions on Syria

The United Nations Security Council failed to pass rival resolutions on a truce in war-torn Syria on Saturday.

Russia blocked one resolution drafted by the French which would have demanded an end to all hostilities in Aleppo, including Syrian and Russian bombing runs.

It is the fifth time Russian has used a veto to block U.N. action to end the Syrian war.

The other draft that failed to pass was devised by Russia had no language about putting a stop to the the airstrikes in Aleppo, which Russia argues would provide cover to al Nusra terrorists. It failed to receive the requisit 9 votes in the 15-member group, and was opposed by countries including the U.S., France and the United Kingdom.

The failure to pass the resolutions marks the latest setback to putting an end the five-year conflict in Syria between the Syrian government and rebel groups which has taken 300,000 lives and resulted in million of refugees fleeing the carnage.

British Ambassador Matthew Rycroft said it was “a bad day for Russia, but an even worse day for the people of Aleppo.”
