Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., couldn’t name anyone who could be seen as a national leader of Democrats, and instead said people at the “grassroots” are leading the party.
“The grassroots,” she said on MSNBC when asked who is leading the Democrats.
“I mean, you can either get in front of it and call it a parade, or you can stand to the side and be left behind,” she said.
When pressed if any one person could be seen as the party’s leader, MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski said Warren should say it was her. But Warren dodged the question and said Democrats are busy fighting off the GOP agenda on their own.
“Right now, we’re fighting our fights,” she said, referring to efforts to beat back the Republican tax reform plan.
“We’ll soon be in the ’18 electoral politics, but not today,” she said.
Other Democrats have acknowledged that Democrats at this point have no single national leader since Hillary Clinton lost the 2016 election to Donald Trump. In July, Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, couldn’t name anyone.
“I don’t know if we really have one, to be honest with you,” Ryan said.
