The principal of a Woodbridge elementary school is facing embezzlement charges for allegedly using a school credit card for personal expenses.
Prince William Couny police said that 48-year-old Jenny Bermant, the principal at Kilby Elementary School, was arrested Thursday and charged with one count of embezzlement.
Prince William County Public Schools notified police earlier this week after an investigation by school officials found irregularities with a district-issued credit card. Police began looking into the matter, and investigators found that Bermant used the school card for her personal use, authorities said.
Police allege that Bermant made $8,000 in unauthorized purchases using the card between June 2011 and March 2012. She used the card to buy electronics, including a television and an iPhone, said 1st Sgt. Kim Chinn, a police spokeswoman.
The school district said in a statement earlier this week that Bermant had been placed on administrative leave after an investigation by an auditor and risk management personnel.
Amy Jordan, a retired Prince William County principal, took over at Kilby after Bermant was put on leave.
Police said Bermant was released on a $3,500 unsecured bond. She is scheduled to next appear in court on June 13.
