Springfield man charged in fatal DUI crash

A Springfield man has been charged in an alleged drunken-driving crash that killed a teenager in Richmond overnight.

Richmond police said 23-year-old Varinder Chahal ran a red light shortly after 12:30 a.m. Wednesday and his 2004 Mazda 6 struck a 2007 Toyota Yaris, then hit a building.

A passenger in the Yaris, 19-year-old Carolina Perez, of Virginia Beach, died at a hospital a few hours later. The Yaris driver and another passenger were hospitalized with injuries police said weren’t life-threatening.

Chalal has been charged with felony manslaughter, driving under the influence and refusal to submit to a blood or breath test.

The four passengers in Chalal’s car weren’t injured.
