The Secret Service lifted a half an hour lock-down at the White House Wednesday afternoon after investigating an unattended package at nearby Lafayette Park, according to a government official.
The agency has declared the package safe and reopened Lafayette Park and Pennsylvania Avenue and the White House.
President Obama was not at the White House when the security concerns began. He is spending late Wednesday afternoon visiting wounded veterans at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md.
The lock-down went into place at 2:58 p.m. as Vice President Joe Biden was about to speak at a Solar Power International Conference near Los Angeles. It lasted until approximately 3:35 p.m.
