Pete Buttigieg bashed Sanders in Wednesday’s debate on the grounds that he hasn’t leveled with the public about the cost of his Medicare for All proposal — or his health.
“If you add up his policies all together, they come to $50 trillion. He’s only explained $25 trillion worth of revenue, which means that the hole in there is bigger than the size of the entire economy of the United States,” said the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana.
Sanders has not yet released a detailed funding plan for his Medicare for All policy, instead merely generalizing that taxes will go up.
The Democratic candidates have debated how “Medicare for all” should be financed in all eight previous debates.
Sanders has also come under fire for withholding details about his October 2019 heart attack, though he has since released health records, including two reports from Vermont cardiologists, touting his physical fitness. Buttigieg said the records that Sanders released after quietly undergoing treatment for a heart attack do not amount to the level of transparency Sanders must afford voters.
“The time has come to level with the American people about matters personal and on matters of policy,” Buttigieg said Wednesday.
