Virginia to sell E-ZPass at AAA, Wegmans for $35

Virginia will sell E-ZPasses for $35 at retail locations across Northern Virginia, including AAA Mid-Atlantic and Wegmans locations, officials announced this week.

The price includes $35 of prepaid tolls, $15 of which can be used right away. To use the rest of the money, drivers will have to register the devices on the phone, web or in person.

The passes will be available as soon as Friday at 13 AAA Mid-Atlantic locations across the state. Customers can find the locations at ezpassva.com.

“It’s an alternative for people so they don’t have to stand in line,” AAA Mid-Atlantic’s John Townsend said. “The way of the future is with these toll lanes.”

Wegmans signed an agreement to sell the transponders Wednesday, said Virginia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Shannon Marshall. The agency is also hoping to sign agreements with other retailers.

VDOT is expanding E-ZPass distribution to keep up with anticipated demand once the Beltway Express lanes open, as early as next year. The lanes will require an E-ZPass for those who wish to pay for a less congested commute, or an E-ZPass Flex for carpoolers who want to ride free.
