Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., would like to see Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., considered for the Supreme Court.
“I’m going to recommend Trey Gowdy be one of the folks that I would have a strong recommendation for him serving on the Supreme Court,” Scott said on CNN’s “The Van Jones Show,” set to air Sunday evening. “I hope that the president will be open to that recommendation.”
Gowdy, who is chairman of the Oversight Committee, announced earlier this year that he is retiring from Congress at the end of his current term. He is a former federal prosecutor who was elected to serve South Carolina’s 4th Congressional District in 2010.
Upon announcing his intent not to seek re-election this year, Gowdy said he intended to return to the justice system.
Scott, who recently co-authored a book with his South Carolina colleague, touted Gowdy as an “incredibly fair” individual who has criticized both the Obama and Trump administrations.
Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement last week, after which Trump said he would stick to his shortlist of 25 individuals. He said Friday he had narrowed that list to five people, including two women, and that he will announce his pick on July 9.
However, Trump may be open to suggestions. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said on ABC’s “This Week” that she urged Trump to widen his search, and noted that the White House counsel had informed her that the president had added a few names to his list.
