Daniels’ return is likely

The Redskins told defensive end Phillip Daniels they wanted him back. Then they offered him a new contract a few days ago. So it’s no wonder that Daniels said, “I’m 90 percent sure it will get done before free agency.”

Daniels said the only reason the contract offer, first reported by the Washington Post, has not been signed is because there are a few details to be ironed out early this week.

“It wasn’t the best deal; it wasn’t a bad deal,” he said in a phone interview Sunday night.

Daniels said in talking with general manager Bruce Allen and with new defensive line coach Jacob Burney that he remained in the franchise’s plans, despite turning 37 on Thursday and with a new defensive staff in place. Daniels, who did not miss a game last season after missing all of 2008 with a knee injury, has played for Washington since 2004. But Daniels, who played at 305 pounds last year, has the size to play end in a 3-4 or a 4-3. The Redskins plan to use both fronts this season, similar to what Dallas has done the past couple years.

“Coach Burney said I was a perfect fit for what they were trying to do,” Daniels said.
