Anne Arundel County Police charged a former Glen Burnie High School music teacher with child abuse after one of his students reported they had a sexual relationship for two years, starting when she was 16.

The girl came forward when she found out Baltimore County Police were investigating the teacher?s relationship with another Glen Burnie High student, court records said.

Jeffrey Thompson, 37, resigned in July 2006, the same month Anne Arundel County Police began talks with the alleged victim, now 19.

The girl told police that she had an “ongoing sexual relationship” with Thompson, beginning in May 2003 when she was a 16-year-old junior at Glen Burnie High School.

Anne Arundel County Police spokesman Lt. David Waltemeyer said the girl was aware of the Baltimore County Police investigation of Thompson, and decided to come forward. According to charging documents, the first romantic encounter between the girl and the teacher occurred in May 2003. The girl was a member of the band, and she went to see Thompson in the band room about a band-related issue when Thompson kissed and fondled her and told her “I love you,” court records state. As months progressed, Thompson and the girl had sex in his office at Glen Burnie High School and at his home in Severn, according to court records.

She said he fondled her through her clothes on a daily basis during the school day, and the girl recalled Thompson telling her at one point, “I really love you and that is why this is OK,” charging documents state. From 1997 to 1998, Thompson taught music at Meade Middle School, and later at Meade High School until 1999, and Glen Burnie High School until this July.
