Romney: Health mandate fundamentally conservative

On Fox News this morning, Mitt Romney was asked to comment on Newt Gingrich’s recent attacks on his Massachusetts health care plan.

Romney defended his plan, reminding the audience his health insurance plan was “conservative” and approved by Gingrich and the Heritage foundation.

Romney also suggested that the individual mandate for health insurance was “a conservative principle.”

“It is fundamentally a conservative principle to insist that people take personal responsibility as opposed to turning the government for giving out free care.” Romney said.

As the Examiner’s Philip Klein noted moments ago, “As Romney defends mandate as conservative, remember Obamacare’s mandate is called ‘individual responsibility requirement.'”
