Katy Perry was full of her usual spark during her musical performance at Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular on Wednesday, but the pop princess revealed a different, more political side to PARADE magazine. Although we have yet to see her smiling face campaigning alongside Sarah Jessica Parker and Anna Wintour, Perry made her feelings on President Obama clear, specifically in regards to his recent support for same-sex marriage.

“My viewpoint on all these things—equality for women, the choice to love anyone you want—hopefully, we will look back at this moment and think like we do now concerning [other] civil rights issues. We’ll just shake our heads in disbelief, saying, ‘Thank God we’ve evolved,’” she told PARADE. “That would be my prayer for the future.”
Perry also showed PARADE a more personal side to her normally bubbly persona, lamenting that she is “a bit weirder than the average pop star.” She told the magazine that her road to becoming the first woman in Billboard history to claim five No. 1 singles from one album was a journey full of obstacles. However, getting into character during her recent “Part of Me” video shoot allowed her to experience a different kind of “obstacle.’”
“I didn’t know a lot about people in the service, but it was so intriguing to be at Camp Pendleton listening to everybody’s unique story. They train extremely hard; they’re all, like, Hulks. I have so much respect for them.”
