Marine helicopter crash in Hawaii kills 1, injures 21

A U.S. Marine Osprey crashed in Hawaii Sunday, killing one Marine and injuring 21 other people.

The crash of the MV-22 Osprey, which Marine Corps spokesman Capt. Brian Block described as a “hard landing,” occurred at about 11:40 a.m. Sunday local time at Bellows Air Force Station on Oahu.

The injuries ranged from critical to minor, Marine Crops Pacific spokesman Capt. Alex Lim said. Twenty-two people were aboard the helicopter, including 21 Marines and one Navy Corps assigned to the unit, when it went down.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, according to Lim.

The Osprey program was nearly shut down after two test crashes killed Marines in 2000. It also has a history of mechanical failures. However, the Osprey aircraft has since been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, and are helping with earthquake relief in Nepal.
