His first appearance in ESPN’s highlights didn’t go so well. Madison High School sophomore Andy McGuire, backpedaling to receive a kickoff in the fall, caught the ball just as he banged into the goal posts. Soon an embarrassing moment was featured on the dominant sports network.
Now he wants back on for something else.

McGuire might get there one day. On Friday, the star shortstop pulled a rarity for players in this area: He committed to play baseball for college powerhouse Texas.
“He’s not your normal player,” Madison coach Pudge Gjormand said. “He’s not your normal sophomore.”
McGuire handled his recruiting as he did the ESPN clips: with humility. As classmates watched it on a cafeteria TV, McGuire stood in the back and laughed it off.
“I got some jokes for probably a good month and a half,” he said. “But it’s pretty cool. Most people my age aren’t able to say they’ve been on ESPN. But it humbles you.”
