Ted Kennedy, “lion of the Senate” (whatever that may mean — a reference to his full head of hair, perhaps), peace negotiator, bon vivant, scion of bootleggers, and driver extraordinaire, is to be knighted by Queen Elizabeth, Gordon Brown announced yesterday to a joint session of Congress. Said Brown in his panegyric to Kennedy: “Known in every continent — Northern Ireland today is at peace, more Americans have healthcare, children around the world are going to school — and for all those things, we owe a great debt to the life and courage of Senator Edward Kennedy.” Wait a minute! I thought George Mitchell brought peace to Northern Ireland! And wasn’t Hillary “SCHIP” Clinton responsible for pushing through health care legislation for children? Oh, never mind. I’ll leave the “more-heroically-liberal-than-thou” contest to them that’s liberal. I would like to put in a word for some who, but for the tender mercies of Teddy Kennedy, might have been around to benefit from all this bounty, namely, Mary Jo Kopechne and her unborn children.
